Rs.92.98-crore works executed under MNREGS in Nagapattinam

Works to the tune of Rs.92.98 crore is being implemented under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme for the current fiscal here in the district. These include 2,314 works in all the 434 panchayats in the district. These were among the host of central schemes that came up for appraisal by the district Monitoring and Supervisory Committee, at the Collectorate recently.

Of the total number of works under MNREGS for the current fiscal, it was submitted to the Committee that 1,006 works were under implementation. For the last fiscal 2010-11, MNREGS envisaged 2,855 works at a cumulative cost of Rs.100.31 crore in all 434 panchayats in the district.

Of these, 724 works have been completed at a cost of Rs.71.88crore, and remaining works are slated for completion. The works had generated employment for 1.09 lakh families , according to the submission made by the District Rural Development Agency.

Besides the MNREGS programme, works taken up under the Member of Parliament Local Area Development Schemes(MPLADS), Indira Awaas Yojana, Total Sanitation Programme, Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana, drinking water schemes and underground drainage scheme, were also scrutinised. Further, computerisation of pattas, Indira Gandhi National Old Age Pension Scheme, Indira Gandhi National Widow Pension Scheme, India Gandhi National Differently Abled Pension Scheme, accident relief scheme, entrepreneurial training and economic assistance for SHGs, were among the welfare schemes discussed by the Committee.
