Rs.66.55 cr. for development works in Madurai dt.

MADURAI, AUG. 14. The State Government has sanctioned Rs.66.55 crores for implementation of 11,000 development works in Madurai district, the Speaker, K. Kalimuthu, said here on Friday.

Inaugurating an additional building of the Tirunagar branch library, constructed under the Local Area Development (LAD) fund of Tirupparankundram MLA, S. M. Seenivel, at a cost of Rs.2.75 lakhs, he said the focus of the State was on rural development.

The Government would execute schemes, which would facilitate village development, he said, adding that the State had given its nod to open 35 village libraries. It had also sanctioned Rs.1 crore for the maintenance of 115 libraries in the district, he said.

The Government was concentrating on village development to prevent the exodus of people to cities, the Collector, D. Raajendiran, said.

Most of the libraries in the city were functioning only from rented buildings. Hence, the district administration should take steps to get funds for construction of own buildings, M. Pappavalli, District Library Officer, said.

Heeding the request of R.K. Balaraman, president, Tirunagar town panchayat, Mr. Seenivel sanctioned Rs.2.5 lakhs on the stage from his LAD fund towards construction of the first floor for the Tirunagar library.

Earlier, the Speaker inaugurated a community hall, built under the LAD fund of Mr. Seenivel, at Vilacheri.

The Project Officer of District Rural Development Agency, R. Krishnaswamy, also spoke.
