There is enough stock of fertilizer, says Ramnad Collector

RAMANATHAPURAM: Crop loan to the tune of Rs.5.16 crore has been disbursed to various farmers, according to the Collector, K.S. Muthuswaamy.

Speaking to reporters after presiding over a mass contact programme held at Venkatakurichi near here on Wednesday, he said the State Government had fixed a target of Rs.10 crore as crop loan to the farmers of the district. All cooperative banks were directed to disburse the crop loan quickly.

The remaining amount would be distributed to the needy farmers within this month.

He said there was no dearth of fertilizer particularly urea this year.

Enough stock of fertilizer had been maintained in all blocks.

However, the administration had received some complaints of over pricing of fertilizers in some places. Show cause notices had been sent to two fertilizer traders for selling fertilizers more than the stipulated prices.

Instructions were given to the agriculture officials to conduct surprise raids to regulate the fertilizer trading. If the traders were found guilty, their licence would be cancelled.

Mr. Muthuswaamy said that except a few areas, most of the areas in the district had received good rain.

He had received information that some paddy fields were submerged in heavy rain. However, there was no threat to the standing crops, as the current stage of the crop could withstand the water stagnation for sometime. Actions would be taken to drain the excessive water.

The Executive Engineer of the PWD was asked to take steps to bring the Vaigai water to the Ramanathapuram big tank and other system tanks.

They were put on high alert to prevent breach of tanks, owing to rain, he said.
