Rs. 32.7 cr. sought for relief

Chennai Nov. 13. The Chennai Corporation has sought Rs. 32.7 crores from the revenue department's calamity relief fund for rain relief measures in the city.

Sources said the civic agency has demanded Rs 12.7 crores for `immediate' desilting of 16 waterways in the city, including the Mambalam canal, which passes through zones VII, VIII and IX. The canal that passes through Prakasam Road, G.N.Chetty Road, Vijayaraghava Road, Sir Thyagaraya Road, Venkatnarayana Road, South Usman Rd, CIT Nagar Main Road and Anna Salai before joining the Adyar river next to the YMCA.

Other than this, the Corporation has also demanded Rs 10 crores for immediate relaying of roads, Rs five crores for debris clearance, Rs five crores for procuring asphalt and binding mixture, Rs two crores for storm water drains, Rs one crores for running relief centre and Rs 50 lakhs for water baling out operations.

Officials said at least Rs 10 crores of the demanded amount would be required immediately if the Corporation were to carry out relief measures.
