Road show for `Comptex 2005'

KARUR, MARCH 17. The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Southern Region, organised a road show here on Tuesday in connection with its conference `Comptex 2005' on sustainable competitiveness of textile industry, scheduled for April 7 and 8 in Coimbatore.

The end of quota has opened up new and challenging vistas to the textile export units in India and there is a need to have in place a sustainable competitive edge among the exporters to make the best of the situation. The `Comptex 2005' would provide the `cutting edge' knowledge to the exporters and industry people, according to the Chairman, CII (SR) Textiles Sub-Committee, Manikam Ramaswami.

Leading stakeholders and policy-makers would focus on preparing a road map to promote handloom sector including redefining the role of the handlooms, repositioning the sector through brand building, creating niche market and fostering skills, Mr. Ramaswami said.

Another area coming under focus would be `cotton self-sufficiency' in the region through encouraging contract farming and cutting the number of layers between the farmers and the mills. Other areas to be focussed on at the conference would be application of appropriate technology for pollution control and technical textiles, Mr. Ramaswami said, inviting the textile industry players from Karur to take part in the conference.

The Chairman, Handloom Export Promotion Council, M. Sivakannan, expressed the hope that the conference would help the Karur textile industry people to have an insight into the current trends in the industry apart from exposing them to various inputs from experts in the field. A large number of textile exporters and entrepreneurs attended the road show.
