Residents block traffic, seek relief

CHENNAI: Reports of people blocking roads to demand better management of flood relief continued to trickle in on Monday.

In about dozen places, people blocked traffic demanding distribution of relief material.

According to police, at six places on Konnur High Road people blocked traffic. Traffic was diverted through the lanes of Ayanavaram and other residential localities. Residents demanded that their areas be declared flood-hit and they be provided relief material, including cash.

The protest went on for two hours on Konnur High Road, throwing traffic out of gear, police said. Similarly, on Grand Northern Trunk Road a large number of residents gathered on the road from 10.30 a.m., demanding relief material. Traffic on the busy arterial road came to a grinding halt.

Even after an assurance from the Revenue authorities the crowd refused to disperse and till 3 p.m., police said.

People gathered along Manali Highway affecting traffic in Sathangadu, Manali New Town area and Mathur villages.

A senior police officer said 40 per cent of the vehicles were diverted during the protest.
