PONDICHERRY: A high-level meeting of department heads convened by the Government today decided to speed up the permanent rehabilitation process.

Heads of government departments have been asked to draw plans to utilize the World Bank allotted money for permanent housing for the fishermen, sources said.

The meeting also decided to ask the 11 NGO's who have agreed to participate in the process to start the work immediately.

The government has already acquired the land for building houses in Karaikal. About 3600 houses spread across 19 villages have to be constructed.

However, land acquisition in Pondicherry is yet to take off. Only at one village the land has been acquired and the process is on in 3 villages.

Fishermen in 15 hamlets have to be rehabilitated in Pondicherry. The government is yet to identify the land in 11 villages along the ECR stretch. Lack of government land and opposition from people of some castes to the rehabilitation of fishermen near their village was coming in way of identifying land along the ECR stretch, sources said.
