Recognition for association denied

CHENNAI July 26. Police authorities have rejected recognition to the Tamil Nadu Constabulary Association, meant for subordinate police personnel.

Following a High Court order last month, the Director-General, B.P.Nailwal, gave the association representatives a hearing on their request seeking recognition. Later, the plea was not granted by the department.

Reacting to the decision, the Janata Party president, Subramanian Swamy, whose public interest litigation plea is pending before the High Court, said subject to safeguards, formation of an association was guaranteed by Article 19 of the Constitution.

But authorities ``are reluctant to give up their master-slave relations with sub-inspectors and constables, exploiting them to do menial private household work, which would be threatened by an association," he said.
