"Only Karunanidhi can resolve Cauvery row"

Special Correspondent

Thanjavur: This is the right time to find a solution to the Cauvery issue and Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi alone can do it, M.P. and Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam presidium chairman L. Ganesan said here on Thursday.

He told reporters that "influence of Karunanidhi is at its peak," both in the State and at the Centre.

People had an impression that the government at the Centre was DMK-led United Progressive Government and not Congress-led Government.

He said Mr. Karunanidhi had been Chief Minister five times, ever since the Cauvery dispute began in 1974, when the 1924 agreement was to be renewed. With his experience, he could find a solution and even pressure the Centre to make Karnataka implement the final order.

Though the Cauvery River Water Disputes Tribunal gave the interim award in 1991, it was never implemented. The issue was neglected not only by the Centre, but also the Congress governments in power in Karnataka.
