"Government should absorb losses"

Transport corporation staff body seeks road tax holiday

Coimbatore: In the absence of fare revision resulting in the State Transport Corporations incurring huge losses, the State Government should come forward to manage the finances of these organisations, the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation Staff Federation has said.

Federation sources said a memorandum had been sent to the Government. Kerala had 48 paise as fare per km while in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka it was 52 paise. In Tamil Nadu it was 28 paise. The fares varied, despite the diesel price in these States being the same. The federation said the Government should absorb the losses arising out of low fares. Making the corporations run on loss and not granting enough financial autonomy had resulted in the corporations almost coming to the sinking stage because of recurring capital losses.
