Public hearing on coastal zone plan map conducted

A public hearing on preparing Kanyakumari District Coastal Zone Management Plan (CZMP) maps was held at the Collectorate here on Thursday.

Participating in the meeting, Fr. Kildos of the Coastal Peace and Development said big hotels and amusement parks had come up in the Coastal Regulation Zone, formed under an Act of 1991. But the government was not allowing structures which were being used by fishermen.

The Tamil Nadu State Coastal Zone Management Authority (TNSCZMA) has resolved to prepare the CZMP maps as per the guidelines and specifications prescribed by the Coastal Regularity Zone (CRZ) Notification, 2011, through the Department of Environment.

Accordingly, a draft CZMP map of Kanyakumari district was prepared with details of survey numbers and classification of the CRZ areas viz Coastal Regulation Zone 1 (sensitive area), Coastal Regulation Zone II (substantially developed areas), and Coastal Regulation Zone III (undeveloped areas).

In Kanyakumari district, Kollemcode, Ezhudesam, Karungal, Keezhkulam, Painkulam and Palapallam in Vilavancode taluk; Ritapuram, Colachel, Kallukoottam, Manavalakurichy and Kadiayapattinam in Kalkulam taluk; and Ganapathipuram (Neendakarai A) Dharmapuram, Madhusoothanapuram, Thenganputhoor, Thamaraikulam, Agastheeswaram, Kanyakumari and Azhagappapuram in Agastheeswaram taluk have been included in the CZMP maps.

District Revenue Officer S. Palanisamy presided over the public hearing. Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board District Environment Engineer Shunmugha Sundaram and officials from the Fisheries and other departments and representatives of various organisations, including P. Justin Antony, founder of the Tamil Nadu Fishermen Development Trust, participated.
