TIRUCHI: : The Tiruchi Association of Psychiatrists will host the 21st annual conference of the Indian Psychiatric Society, Tamil Nadu Chapter— TANPSYCON-2005, on June 18 and 19 in the city on the theme `Nature and Nurture.'

Addressing mediapersons on Sunday, the secretary of the Organising Committee and Head of the Department of Psychiatry, Government KAP Viswanatham Medical College Hospital, R. Kumar said about 20 research papers on different branches of psychiatry would be presented at the conference.

Lectures on `Disaster Management' by C. R. Chandrasekar, Professor in Psychiatry and `Genetics of Psychosis' by Sanjeev Jain, Additional Professor in Psychiatry, both from NIMHANS, Bangalore, would be a highlight of the conference. A special lecture on the influence of psychiatry in Tamil literature by the Principal of the Swami Dayananda College of Arts and Science, Manjakkudi, would also be a part of the programme, Dr. Kumar said.

Dr. Kumar said there was still a lack of awareness of mental disorders among the public. Though most mental illnesses could be cured and genetic disorders controlled to a large extent, patients often had to go without medical help owing to the stigma attached to mental diseases. Also in the case of patients found on the streets, the elaborate legal procedures involved before providing them medical help deprived them of quality health care.

An awareness programme on mental health and diseases would be held for the public by the end of the month, during which public could participate and clarify their doubts on the topic by experts in psychiatry, Dr. Kumar added.
