Probe into loan irregularities involving railway employees

Staff Reporter

MADURAI: The Vigilance Department of the Southern Railway has launched an enquiry into the alleged furnishing of "incorrect" salary certificates by some railway employees for obtaining loans from various banks.

At least 50 employees of the Madurai Division were summoned to the Special Police Establishment office of the Central Bureau of Investigation on the railway station premises here for questioning on Monday. A couple of CBI officials were also present. Following specific information that these employees secured loans by submitting "fake" salary certificates, the vigilance officials initiated a detailed enquiry.

"The enquiry is in a preliminary stage now. The CBI's Anti-Corruption Bureau is following the proceedings closely. We are also looking at other misappropriations resorted to by a few railway employees who arranged loans for others after taking bribe from them," an investigator told The Hindu.

According to sources, it was mandatory on the part of employees to obtain written sanction from the head of the department before seeking loans.

Several employees ignored the rule and borrowed loans directly. When the banks referred the list of defaulters to the finance department for recovery, it could not be entertained because there was no official binding, sources added.
