Prisoners fake order to secure release

Staff Reporter

PONDICHERRY: : Two prisoners who secured release from the Cuddalore prison by producing a bogus Supreme Court order which `quashed' their life sentence were arrested on Friday.

Masilamani and Vasu were awarded life imprisonment by a sessions court at Cuddalore.

The punishment for their involvement in a murder at Kadapalayar in Panruti 14 years ago was upheld by the Madras High Court.

They approached the Supreme Court in 2002.

"On July 22, the sessions court received an `order' from the Supreme Court quashing their sentence. A Cuddalore advocate, dealing with the prisoners' appeal, also received a copy of the order. Based on this, the sessions court issued a counter order to release the prisoners on the same day," said S. Paneerselvam, Superintendent of Police, Cuddalore, said.

Later, the prison authorities found something missing in the Supreme Court order and informed the sessions court.

SC Registry clarifies

"Two days ago, the sessions court judge sent a fax to the Registrar of the Supreme Court enquiring about its order. The judge received a message that no such order was given," Mr. Paneerselvam said.

Both were arrested again and a case was registered.

As per the sessions court's directive, Kumaresan, DSP, District Crime Branch, is conducting an investigation.

The assistance of the Delhi Police has been sought.
