Postgraduate course in diabetes planned

CHENNAI, AUG. 21. The Madras Diabetes Research Foundation (MDRF) is conducting a post-graduate course in diabetes from September 24 to 26 as part of training more physicians to tackle diabetes more effectively.

This is the second such course being organised in association with the American Diabetes Association (ADA).

The course will be attended by over 1,200 delegates from India and abroad. The international faculty will comprise 10 eminent scientists from the U.S., including Alan D. Cherrington, president of the ADA. As many as 42 senior diabetologists from all over India will serve on the national faculty.

V. Mohan, Rema Mohan, M. Balasubramanyam, V. Somasekaran and Rekha Thankappan of M.V.Diabetes Centre will be the local organisers of the event.

Workshop

The MDRF and the ADA will also hold a one-day workshop for diabetes educators on September 23. The programme is open to diabetes educators, nurses, dieticians, home science graduates and others working in the field of diabetes education.

These educators fill the critical gap information left by busy physicians. The programme seeks to help develop the specialty of diabetes education in India.

The international faculty includes Mary Austin, president, American Association of Diabetes Educators and Catherine Tibbetts, president of ADA's health care section.

The workshop will have lectures on diabetes management and the role of diabetes educators. The highlights will include a live demonstration on healthy diets and practical nutrition.
