Ponnaiyan's charge baseless, says Karunanidhi

CHENNAI, JULY 24. The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) president, M. Karunanidhi, today refuted the All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam leader and the Finance Minister, C.Ponnaiyan's charge that his party won the Lok Sabha election by "trickery."

The Minister's allegation that the DMK was behind deletion from the electoral rolls of the names of 43 lakh voters, who were AIADMK sympathisers was baseless, Mr.Karunanidhi said.

It was the Chief Electoral Officer under the control of the State Government who was responsible for revision of the rolls and the DMK had no role in it, he said here.

Similarly Mr.Ponnaiyan's argument that there were precedents of budget discussions being held for a shorter duration had no basis. He had not mentioned under what circumstances the discussions were held for a shorter duration. Mr. Karunanidhi said the Opposition parties did not raise objections when the ruling party wanted the budget passed without discussion in February in view of the Lok Sabha election. But their question was why the House was not convened in June itself, after the election, for a full-fledged discussion.

Denying that he took credit for release of Cauvery water by Karnataka, Mr.Karunanidhi said he had made it clear that it was due to joint efforts by political parties.

About the Chief Minister ordering water release from the Mettur reservoir for Adi Perukku, after ruling it out two days ago, the DMK chief said had he not demanded the water release for the paddy crop, she would have released water now.
