Pondy should not implement VAT: AITUC

Pondicherry May 22. The General Secretary of the Pondicherry AITUC, V. S. Abishegam has called upon the Pondicherry Government not to accept the value added tax (VAT) as it would be injurious to the development of the Union Territory and also the industrial sector besides hitting workers.

In a statement here on Wednesday he said that the AITUC along with other left party spnsored trade unions had been urging the Administration to strengthen the public sector undertakings here. The uniform floor rate of taxes had already hit the economy of the Union Territory. The VAT would be an added hardship and hence the Government should not accept it and refrain from implementing the new tax system.

The protest against the VAT was one of the planks on which the one-day strike was observed by the left parties and their respective trade unions such as AITUC, CITU, AICCTU and a few other workers outfits in Pondicherry on Wednesday.
