Policemen injured in violence

CUDDAPAH APRIL 15. The Rajampet Circle Inspector, N.T. Rama Rao, and three constables sustained minor injuries when thousands of people hurled stones at them and stormed the Vontimitta police station on Tuesday evening.

The policemen resorted to lathicharge to control a crowd which was watching the `bandalagudu' (pairs of bulls drawing a large boulder) competitions in the dried-up Vontimitta tank. The crowd turned violent when a 14-year-old boy, Jagadeeswara Reddy, of Salabad village sustained a fracture in the leg and a few others were injured.

The mob hurled stones at the police personnel on bandobust duty and later stormed the police station nearby.

The Superintendent of Police, Abhilasha Bisht, rushed to Vontimitta to take stock of the situation.

Additional armed police forces were deployed at Vontimitta in view of the Kalyanotsavam of Sri Kodandarama Swamy temple scheduled tonight.
