Police told to file report in lawyer "assault case"

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The Madras High Court has asked the Chennai police to file a factual report on the allegations of an advocate that he was assaulted and intimidated by a group of persons in connection with a civil case.

When a writ petition, filed by advocate V.P. Raghu, came up for hearing, the First Bench of Chief Justice A.P. Shah and Justice F.M. Ibrahim Kalifulla asked Additional Advocate-General A.L. Somayaji to furnish details of the case by Tuesday.

He also alleged that the Anna Nagar police had registered a criminal case against the advocate with a "mala fide intention."

He charged the police with failing to nab the culprits though they were available on the police station premises.

His right to carry on his profession as guaranteed in the Constitution had been violated, and he would not get justice from the city police, Mr. Raghu said and prayed for a direction to hand over the probe to the Central Bureau of Investigation.
