Police action on workers condemned

Pondicherry June 25. The Pondicherry CPI (M) Secretary, T. Murugan today alleged that at least four persons who were running eateries or selling fruits near Thattanchavady junction in Pondicherry were `lathicharged' and attacked by the police though they were running business without violating the prescribed time limit.

Mr. Murugan who presented before the reporters the persons, who sustained injuries in the forearms, fingers and in the forelegs said that as soon as the police `indiscriminately hit the workers' a representation was made to the Chief Minister around midnight yesterday and they were told by Mr. Rangasamy what the police had `defensively' replied to his query over phone.

Mr. Murugan said that action should be taken against the police personnel, who caused `bleeding injuries' on the workers and if no response was available by July 2 the CPI (M) led trade union would stage a demonstration.
