PM's doublespeak

Sir, — The Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee's flip-flop on Hindutva is strange. While during the campaign for the Gujarat Assembly elections, he was the "advocate" of Narendra Modi, in the recently-concluded BJP national executive, he was soft-pedalling the issue. He wants to "enlarge" the BJP's appeal as a national party. He did not endorse the right-wing aggressive Hindutva agenda of the VHP or the RSS. However, some of his colleagues still swear by Hindutva, the `Moditva' which gave the party a handsome victory in Gujarat. The time has come for Mr. Vajpayee to make his stand clear once and for all.
