Plan to instal lights in 200 houses in Vellore

VELLORE, AUG.21. The District Rural Development Agency (DRDA) has planned to install 150 streetlights and residential lights in 200 houses utilising solar energy during the current financial year, according to P.R.K. Ramesh, project officer of the agency.

Presiding over the Rajiv Gandhi Renewable Energy Day celebrations organised by the DRDA here on Friday, Mr.Ramesh said that solar energy-based streetlights have already been installed in 75 places at a cost of Rs.20 lakhs in Vellore district. The cost included a subsidy of Rs.7 lakhs. In the previous year, 60 biogas stoves and 40 stoves based on fuel gas obtained from night soil were established in the district, with a subsidy of Rs.2,300 each.

Electricity was generated using biomass gasifier in Pachal village near Tirupattur at a cost of Rs.3.5 lakhs, which included a subsidy of Rs.1.45 lakhs.

The project officer said that solar energy-based lights are to be installed in 200 houses in the district at a total cost of Rs.16 lakhs. Solar energy would have to be tapped in a greater measure in order to face shortage of electricity in future on account of scarcity of coal and water, he said.

C.Gnanasekharan, Vellore MLA and Mr.Ramesh gave away 18 prizes to the winners of the district-level inter-school and inter-collegiate elocution, essay and painting competitions conducted in connection with the Renewable Energy Day celebrations. Earlier, 100 students of the Kodayidi Kuppusamy Government Municipal Higher Secondary School here took out a procession in connection with the celebrations.
