Physics in the kitchen!

PONDICHERRY: "Did you know that there is physics in the kitchen? When a mother makes dosa, idly and idlyupma using the same dough it is physics, said S. Mayilavelan, Head of the Department of Physics, Kanchi Mamunivar Post Graduate Centre, Pondicherry.

A loveable subject

Addressing students of the Government High School, Karaiyamputhur, at a seminar on Physics on Wednesday, Dr. Mayilavelan said physics was our sixth sense. He asked students not to get scared by the subject but to try and understand its basics. "It is a very loveable subject and once we know the basics, we will start seeing physics in everything we see", he added.

The Joint Director of Education, Ramdass, said "We are conducting similar seminars throughout the state in all schools and are conducting competitions in school, zonal and state levels.

The schools have been asked to select students, who give the best presentations both visual and oral on "a Century of Physics- achievements and challenges".

According to Head Master R Balasubramanian, two students of this school - Deenadayalan and Pandiyan - belonging to standard X have been selected to attend a zonal-level presentation at the Jeevanandam Higher Secondary School.

The seminar was held to mark the centenary of Einstein's theory of Relativity and also to celebrate the World Year of Physics.
