Periyar varsity VC urged to hold Syndicate poll

SALEM, AUG 1. Periyar University Co-ordination Council, a forum representing the Aided colleges of the University, has urged the Vice-Chancellor to hold elections for the Syndicate from teachers, Principals and General Constituencies immediately.

Presided over by Mr. N. Senthamarai, President of the Zone IV of the Association of University Teachers, Tamil Nadu here on Sunday, the members also wanted the university to hold elections to the Senate from Graduate constituencies of Salem, Namakkal, Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri districts.

They urged the Vice-Chancellor to open new departments and appoint teachers for various faculties and non-teaching staff.

The appointment of the Director for the Institute of Distance Education of the University should be expedited. The functioning of the Distance Education itself should be streamlined.

The Board of Studies must be reconstituted and reconstruction of syllabi had to be taken up. The entire examination pattern should also be streamlined.

While welcoming the appointment of new Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Balakrishnan, the members hoped that he would take steps to elevate the University status on par with other universities in the State.
