Panel to study law student plea

Pondicherry Nov.10. A seven-member committee, comprising a convener and four teachers, a students' representative and a nominee of the Principal of the Dr. Ambedkar Government Law College here, will go into the grievances of a student, who sought permission to continue his studies in the second year. The student was asked to `redo' first year to make up for attendance shortage. Following the decision, the students called off a gherao of the Principal, S.G. Bhat.

The Principal said the internal examinations, which should have been held today, were put off and would be held on November 18. He said once the committee presented the report, he would forward it to the university for follow-up action.

Earlier today the student was taken to the General Hospital after he allegedly consumed some pills following rejection of permission for him to continue his course in the second year.

A section of students asked how the student could be asked to go back to the first year class after he came to second year obtaining `permission'.

However, a section of the staff said the permission was only provisional. The student was asked to `redo' first year only in keeping with the procedure.

The Superintendent of Police, V.J. Chandran, and the Additional District Magistrate were among those present at the meeting.
