TAMIL NADU

Open varsity information centres for every taluk

CHENNAI Oct. 22. The Tamil Nadu Open University wants to establish `information centres' in every taluk in the State, with the help of experienced private providers.

The information centres will be in addition to 11 study-cum-information centres, where students can get enrolled, submit assignments and obtain help from academic counsellers every weekend, M.S. Palanichamy, Vice-Chancellor, told newspersons here today. The university had announced the launching of cost-effective undergraduate, postgraduate and certificate courses, besides MBA, this year. Three study centres were established in Chennai and one each in Tiruchi, Madurai, Tirunelveli, Salem, Coimbatore, Nagapattinam, Vellore and Villupuram.

``The TNOU `s courses are available in English and Tamil mediums and interactive counselling can be obtained every weekend from scholars in these centres. The students can do assignments at home and submit them at the study centres. The assignments carry 25 per cent marks in the terminal examinations.''

The TNOU had so far received 2,000 applications for courses. The other universities closed open university admissions by October 3 but the TNOU process would go till November 30.

To deliver the courses virtually on the doorstep of the students and to reduce long travel to the study centre, the university was establishing the information centres. It had set up 40 such centres.

The university was inviting private providers, who had experience and infrastructure for delivering distance education courses and financial strength to run the information centres. About 25 per cent of the enrolment fee would be available to those running the centres. Interested persons could approach the Registrar here.
