On a stocking spree

Tipplers in Kozhikode district were an unhappy lot during the elections.

Eighteen retail outlets of the Kerala State Beverages Corporation (Manufacturing and Marketing), three shops run by Consumerfed, 20 bar hotels and 180 toddy shops remained closed in the district during the polls in the State.

Never before have the liquor shops been closed for five days.

But this seems to have brought little cheer to liquor prohibitionists as many people purchased enough stocks on the day the campaign ended.

Brisk sales was reported at the outlets. Bar hotels too witnessed an unprecedented rush, said a manager of a hotel.

Locally-made varieties, specially brewed for elections, was available in the rural areas of the district, it is learnt.
