`Obtain permission to enter Sri Lankan waters'

Ramanathapuram Dec. 4. N.J.Bose, general secretary of Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry Fishermen Federation, urged the Indian Government to obtain permission from the Sri Lankan Government for a team of 44 fishermen, which had been waiting for the last two days in the mid-sea, to cross the international boundary line to bring back eight mechanised boats seized by the Sri Lankan Navy.

Speaking to presspersons here today, he said the team, which left from Rameswaram on Tuesday night along with Coast Guard personnel, could not enter the Sri Lankan waters as the Government did not give instructions to the Navy.

The Navy detained 60 fishermen and seized fifteen boats on August 8 on the charge of crossing the international boundary line. The fishermen were later released along with seven boats. Recently, the Government ordered the release of the remaining boats. Following a direction from the Fisheries department, the team went to Sri Lanka to bring back the boats.
