`No delay in implementation of welfare schemes'

Pondicherry Dec. 24. The Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy, today refuted the charge that the Administration was delaying implementation of welfare schemes for Scheduled Castes and the poor.

Distributing handloom dhotis and sarees to Adi Dravidars at T.N. Palayam in the Embalam (Reserved) constituency here, he said the Government was keen that garments made only by weavers' cooperatives societies attached to PONTEX and PONFAB were supplied. It was the reason for the implementation of the scheme now instead of before Deepavali this year.

The work was assigned to the societies to ensure continued work for poor weavers. Yarn produced in the Government-owned Spinning Corporation was used, he said.

About Rs 5.5 crores was spent for making the goods, which would be made available to Adi Dravidars, fishermen, the handicapped and those belonging to the Backward Class.

The dhotis and sarees were now distributed to enable the beneficiaries to celebrate the Pongal festival with joy and happiness.
