Nine persons injured in clashes at Ayencheri

Attacks a conspiracy, says DCC president

KOZHIKODE: Poll-related violence continued unabated in the rural belts of Kozhikode district on Thursday.

At least 14 people were wounded, one of them critically, in the clashes between activists of the United Democratic Front (UDF) and the Left Democratic Front (LDF) at Ayencheri, Chalikkara and Kummankodu in Vadakara taluk.

Nine persons were injured when clashes broken out between the activists of the CPI(M) and Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) at Ayencheri at 9.30 a.m. The UDF had wrested the grama panchayat from the ruling CPI(M)-led LDF. Three activists of the IUML, T.M. Mammad, Abdul Jabber and Abdul Rehman, and Indian National League Meypayyur mandalam secretary C.H. Hameed were admitted to Baby Memorial Hospital in Kozhikode city. The others were admitted to a private hospital and Government Taluk Hospital at Vadakara.

The police claimed that the situation had been brought under control. They said eight persons have been arrested in connection with the incident.

Three persons, two IUML activists and a CPI(M) worker, were injured in clashes at Peramba on Wednesday. Several others were injured at Koduvally grama panchayat the same day.

A mob, reportedly comprising CPI(M) activists, attacked the house of Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) secretary P.C. Radhakrishnan at Kayanna grama panchayat on Thursday. The Congress-led UDF has called for a dawn-to-dusk hartal in the grama panchayat on Friday.

Condemning the incidents, the district leadership of the UDF has raised concern over the violence unleashed by the CPI(M) against UDF activists in Kozhikode district.

Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, District Congress Committee (DCC) president M. Veerankutty alleged that there was a political conspiracy behind the incidents.
