Night-long alert in flooded areas

CHENNAI OCT. 31. The Chennai Corporation launched a salvage operation late into Thursday night when several residents were struggling to return home.

The Commissioner, M. Kalaivanan, said all zonal offices had been put on high alert throughout the night, following reports of severe inundation in many areas. At least 50 staff would be on duty round the clock in all the zonal offices to meet emergency requirements, he said.

Water had entered Mosque Street in Chitra Nagar, Kotturpuram where more than 60 huts were marooned, civic sources said. Corporation officials worked into the night to help the residents move out. A section of the MRTS embankment in Velachery was cut open by the civic officials in the night to allow water to drain from residential areas. It is learnt that Corporation officials have asked the PWD to cut open the Cooum river mouth near Island Grounds to ensure water flow into the sea.
