New Kancheepuram rail station inauguration today

Kancheepuram Nov.7. Finishing touches are being given to the new Kancheepuram railway station built at a cost of Rs.1.30 crores on a sprawling 15-acre site to be inaugurated on Friday evening.

A.K. Moorthy and Bandaru Dattatreya, Union Ministers of State for Railways are participating in the function to be held in the presence of Kanchi Sankaracharyas , Jayendra Saraswathi and Vijayendra Saraswathi and the Transport Minister, R.Viswanathan and others.

The new railway station has been created as the present station is somewhat far away from the town and posed a problem to the devotees and tourists visiting the temple town . Besides, it is nearer to the National Highways and the main bazaars and other important places in the town.

A railway official said the new station had been provided with all facilities including computerised reservation.

It may be noted that the present railway station here, one of the oldest railway stations in the State, established during the British period, was renovated at a cost of nearly Rs. 1 crore and was inaugurated in 1998 and the electrification of the Chengalpattu-Kancheepuram line was done two years ago.

The work of the new railway station, which has to be completed by next year, was speeded up with the efforts of Mr. A.K.Moorthy

Several voluntary organisations and consumer fora had requested the Minister to introduce more trains via Kancheepuram and also take up the track diversion work between Kancheepuram and Arakkonam at the earliest for introducing a circular train route, Chennai-

Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Arakkonam-Chennai.
