Navy pays homage to 1971 martyrs

CHENNAI DEC. 4. The Naval Officer-in-Charge, Tamil Nadu, T.Hari, and senior officers today paid homage to martyrs, laying wreaths at the War Memorial here on the occasion of the Navy Day, celebrated to mark the attack on the Karachi harbour during the Indo-Pakistan conflict in 1971.

A reception was organised at Navy House here. The Madras High Court Chief Justice, B.Subhashan Reddy, was the chief guest. Retired and serving naval officers and serving senior officers of the defence forces in Chennai attended.

In the evening, ships of the local flotilla were illuminated.

At INS Rajali, the Naval Air Station at Arakkonam, an inter-school debate, a navy mela, a visit by school children to the base, air displays and entertainment programmes were organised.

The air station is capable of handling all types of aircraft in the defence inventory. Over the years, it evolved into a fully operational air base. It was awarded the unit citation by the Chief of Naval Staff in December 2002.
