More funds for school buildings likely

PUDUKOTTAI, MARCH 14. Steps will be taken for allocation of more funds for the construction of additional class-rooms for government schools, the Minister for Fisheries, M. Radhakrishnan, has said.

In his inaugural address at a function organised to mark distribution of free bi-cycles to girl students, here today, Mr. Radhakrishnan said that the funds available under the MLA Local Area Development programme would be diverted for construction of classrooms.

The Minsiter said that work on construction of classrooms in 17 schools in the district was underway.

Mr. Radhakrishnan said as many as 6,559 girls belonging to Scheduled Caste/Tribe, Backward, Most Backward and other Denotified communities in the district, would get free bi-cycles by the end of this month.

On the achievement under other schemes, the Minister said that the Tamil Nadu Backward Classes Economic Development Corporation and the Tamil Nadu Adi Dravidar Economic Development Corporation have sanctioned loans to the tune of Rs. 24 lakhs for entrepreneurial activities.

Presiding over the function, the Collector, R. Thiyagarajan, said that about 600 schools in the district did not have adequate additional classrooms.

He requested the Minister and other MLAs to allocate funds from the MLA Local Area Development Fund for construction of additional classrooms for at least ten schools in the first phase.
