With the inauguration of a full-fledged Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at the Government Sait Memorial Maternity Hospital here on Friday by M. Buddhichandran, MLA, a long felt need of the district was fulfilled.

Joint Director of Health Services in-charge I. Palraj told The Hindu that the project implemented at a cost of about Rs. 8 lakh under the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) was to strengthen comprehensive emergency new born care.

Over the last one month, 21 doctors, including specialists have been appointed in the Nilgiris, he said.

Five obstetric gynaecologists and three paediatricians have been posted at the Sait Memorial Maternity Hospital. In addition eight nurses have also been appointed.

The upgraded facility can take care of 20 babies at a time.

Henceforth round the clock care can be provided. Hence the necessity to get doctors at short notice from places like Pollachi and Coimbatore and also rush patients to the Coimbatore Medical College hospital can be dispensed with.

The upgrade will also be a boon to the people in remote parts of the Nilgiris like Pandhalur who can be brought here by ambulances. The facilities now available at the Sait Memorial hospital are better than those provided in many of the private hospitals.

Among those present at the inauguration were the Nilgiris Collector In-charge L. Nirmalraj and Sreenivasan of the NRHM.
