Molecular biology lab at JIPMER soon

Pondicherry Dec. 4. The JIPMER Director, R. Sambasiva Rao, has said a molecular biology laboratory would be opened soon at the institute.

Inaugurating a five-day national workshop on `Simple Diagnostic Methods in Infectious Diseases', organised by the Department of Microbiology, in JIPMER here on Tuesday, Dr. Rao underlined the importance of microbiologists in the treatment of infectious diseases.

With the collaboration of the National Institute of Communicable Diseases and the ICMR for interlinking of microbiology institutes and departments, some 30 laboratories, including the one in JIPMER, were to be brought together in the first phase for advanced surveillance.

With emphasis now on evidence-based medicines, the highly developed technology should be utilised for quick results. Here the development of molecular biology would revolutionise the standard and quality of research activities.

The Dean, A.K. Das, said the need of the hour was promoting `bench rounds' concept as that would bring clinicians closer. Research activities and advances in microbiology were also on with full steam and they should be taken to the people, he said.
