ERODE: The general strike called by the AITUC and CITU on Thursday evoked mixed response in the district. All the Transport Corporation buses were operated and milk supply and other essential services were not affected. However, bank, LIC and BSNL employees took part in the strike.

While over 75 per cent of the Revenue Department employees participated in the strike, all the 71 ministerial staff in the district police office attended duty.

CITU, AITUC and Bharath Kisan Sangam volunteers organised demonstrations in 19 places. The Superintendent of Police, P. Nagarajan, said that 3,337 persons including 1,117 women were arrested when they attempted to stage demonstration. In Uthukuli, 65 persons who attempted to stage rail roko were arrested.

In Gobichettipalayam, 650 AITUC and CPI volunteers gathered near Periyar Thidal to stage demonstration. But even before the protest, the police arrested them. In Erode, over 625 volunteers were arrested when they tried to stage protest at the bus stand.

Railway employees belonging to Southern Railway Muzdoor Union staged demonstration before the Railway Station.

Mr. Natarajan said that no untoward incident was reported. Police pickets were posted in the district round-the-clock.
