Ministers inspect relief and restoration works in flood-affected districts

THANJAVUR: The State Minister for Environment and Forests, R. Vaidyalingam, on Thursday distributed relief materials to people affected by the floods at Thiruvidaimaruthur, Kumbakonam and Ammapettai taluks in the district.

He distributed Rs.1,000 in cash, 1 litre of kerosene, a dhoti and sari each to 100 persons at Thiruvidaimaruthur and 51 persons at Kumbakonam. The houses of these people were partially damaged. At Ammapettai the Minister distributed Rs.2,000 in cash, 1 litre of kerosene, a dhoti and sari each to 236 persons, whose houses were fully damaged by the floods. He said relief would be given to all flood-affected persons in the district.

The Minister for Dairy Development, S. Ramachandran, appealed to officials of Tiruvarur district on Thursday to expedite relief and restoration works in flood-affected areas in the district.

He held discussions with Tiruvarur Collector P. Ekambaram, MP R. Kamaraj and other officials regarding relief measures to be taken up in the district on Thursday.

Later, Mr. Ekambaram told presspersons that 1,907 breaches were reported in the Vennar division. A sum of Rs.37 crores was requisitioned from the Government to take up 857 temporary restoration and 2,843 permanent restoration works in the division.

With respect to highways and other roads Rs.6.78 crores was requisitioned to temporarily restore the roads and Rs.35.5 crores for permanent restoration.

So far, a total of 1.1 lakh dhoties and saris and 3.29 lakh litres of kerosene have been distributed to the flood affected.


Banks and bunds of the Coleroon and other rivers passing through Nagapattinam district are being strengthened and relief work is on in full swing, said Pollachi V. Jayaraman, Minister for Food and Cooperation, here on Thursday.

Addressing the gathering after inaugurating relief assistance to the rain- and flood-affected people in Nagapattinam, the Minister, specially deputed to look after and monitor relief and rehabilitation in the district, said the Government would provide relief assistance to all the affected people.

In the morning, the Minister visited and inspected various relief and rehabilitation works in Thalainayar, Kollidam and Sirkazhi blocks. He also supervised the closing of major breaches at Alakkudi and Mudalaimedu Thittu.

C.V. Sankar, Officer on Special Duty (Relief and Rehabilitation), deputed by the Government to coordinate the relief and rehabilitation work in the district, J. Radhakrishnan, Nagapattinam Collector, O.S. Manian, former MP and propaganda secretary of the AIADMK, R. Jeevanandam, Nagapattinam MLA and former Minister, attended the function.

Mr. Radhakrishnan said water from submerged paddy fields were receding quickly.

He said normalcy was being restored in flood-affected villages in Mayiladuturai and Sirkazhi blocks.
