Minister offers to resign

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: The Rajasekhara Reddy Government faced political embarrassment on Saturday when a senior Cabinet Minister, M. Satyanarayana Rao, offered to resign on moral grounds in the wake of allegations and adverse media reports against him in connection with the scam over the sale of temple lands.

The Endowments Minister made the offer to quit to the Chief Minister, Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, at the end of a Cabinet meeting on Saturday, climaxing nearly a week of headline-hitting allegations that the temple lands had been sold at throwaway prices. Although Dr. Reddy rejected the offer, the last word on the resignation is yet to be said since Mr. Satyanarayana Rao is insisting on stepping down.

Dr. Reddy sought to pacify an agitated Mr. Rao stating that his resignation would serve no purpose as he had already ordered an ACB inquiry, cancelled the sale of temple lands.
