Minimum wages planned for mat weavers

COIMBATORE: The consultative committee on minimum wages for mat and basket weavers in the State will submit its report to the State Government in a couple of months, according to N. Sampath Kumar, chairman of the committee.

He told presspersons here on Tuesday that cane mat and basket weaving and furniture making provided direct employment to over 10,000 people in the State and indirectly to 50,000. Recommendation

The committee would recommend wages not less than the floor-level (Rs. 66 a day). The committee, consisting of nine members, held meetings in Pathamadai and Tenkasi and made a field visit to Pollachi on Tuesday.
