‘GHs have necessary instruments for simple procedures’

A rally to create awareness of population control, marking the World Population Day, was flagged off by Collector K. Veera Raghava Rao at Madurai Gandhi N. M. R. Subbaraman College for Women here on Wednesday. About 300 students took part in the campaign.

A series of competitions was also conducted on the occasion.

Addressing the gathering, Mr. Veera Raghava Rao said that women contributed significantly to population control as they were aware of family planning practices.

The Collector pointed out that Kerala and Tamil Nadu had been among the few States with low levels of infant mortality.

He said that women had taken up the responsibility of learning and using effective contraception techniques.

“Men too need to do their part. Nowadays, government hospitals and urban primary health centres are equipped with all necessary instruments for simple procedures,” he said.

The Indian Academy of Paediatrics has come up with Mission 2020 to accelerate reduction in IMR with a target to achieve an IMR of 20 by 2020. The Collector said that he would ensure that Madurai district was in line with the developmental goals of the country.

Mr. Rao also said that smaller family size would mean that ample amenities would be available to the public.

Smaller groups would mean access to greater environmental, financial and social resources. Schemes too could be easily implemented, he added.
