PONDICHERRY: It was a very unusual sight.

A group of around 250 members of the narikurava community, including children and women, trooped into the Congress party office on Vysial Street and met the Pradesh Congress Committee president, P. Shanmugam.

They filed an application seeking a party ticket for Thirubhuvanai MLA Angalan from the constituency.

They told Mr. Shanmugam that they have been residents of the constituency for the last 25 years and that they would like to see the MLA re-elected from the constituency.

The PCC chief said that the opinion of the people in that constituency would be heard and the candidate finalised by the party.

"I also told them to be ready for the Commune Panchayat elections and asked them if they would be interested in contesting the election. They presented me with beads. I was amazed at their craftsmanship in bead making ... Even foreigners would be stunned by their work," Mr. Shanmugam told The Hindu .

The members of the narikurava community have been living in Madagadipet in Thirubhuvanai constituency for nearly 30 years, and have over 200 votes.

"The narikuravas have been living in the constituency for about 30 years now, and participate in the Tuesday shandy (sandhai or market) regularly.

"Only a couple of months ago did we clear a government land and gave them pattas.

"We have also given them water and electricity connections," said Mr. Angalan.

The Thirubhuvanai (reserved) constituency has around 23,000 voters and encompasses areas such as Madagadipet, Thiruvandarkoil, Nallur, Kalitheerthalkuppam, Sellipet, Vambupet, Sorapet and P.S. Palayam and Sanyasikuppam.
