The ruling by Darul Uloom Deoband that a Muslim woman should not contest elections and if she does, she should do so under the veil is condemnable. Political parties cutting across party lines should protest against such retrograde rulings. The Government should take action against persons who issue such irresponsible medieval fatwas.

The fatwa is too conservative and should be ignored. As per the Islamic tradition, it is enough if women cover their heads and wear modest dresses during election campaigns and while taking part in the deliberations of the panchayats.

The Union Law Minister has said there is only one judiciary for the whole country, maintaining at the same time that fatwas are an internal religious matter of Muslims. Isn't there a contradiction?
