GUNTUR: Maoists on Monday blasted the house of the Tenali MP, Vallabhaneni Balashouri, in protest against the Government beginning work on the Pulichintala project on Sunday.

Twelve members of the CPI (Maoist) descended on Morjhampadu in Machavaram mandal of Guntur district in the midnight and after asking the MP's parents to come out of the house, blasted it with tin bombs, police said.

The four-room house suffered extensive damage. Neighbouring houses, however, were spared. Three of the naxalites carried weapons. Six Maoists carried out the operation, Mr. Jojaiah said.

The information was conveyed to the MP while he was travelling in train to Hyderabad. When contacted, Mr. Balashouri said the naxalites had not only damaged the house, but also had taken away Rs. 2 lakhs and jewellery valued at another Rs.1 lakh.

The house was constructed at a cost of Rs. 6 lakhs in 1982, he said. "It is unfortunate that while the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, is taking interest in the welfare of people, naxalites are trying to thwart development. My active participation in getting approvals for the project seems to irked the Maoists," he added.
