The Tirumangalam police on Tuesday arrested a 36-year-old man for cheating a money lender by handing him fake currency notes.

According to the police, Balasubramanian of Mogappair ran a finance business. Recently, Rajesh, 36, of Thirunindravur borrowed Rs. 2 lakh after pledging his four-wheeler.

Two days ago, Rajesh redeemed the pledge by paying cash. After the borrower left the place, Mr. Balasubramanian realised that the currency notes handed over by Rajesh were fake and 98 of them were photocopied papers. As Rajesh did not give legal tender, Mr. Balasubramanian lodged a complaint with the Tirumangalam police. Inspector Murugesan arrested Rajesh on the charge of cheating and remanded him in custody.
