Man disowns `wife' before Bench

MADURAI, MARCH 17. A 21-year-old girl was taken aback today when her husband (according to her), who was produced before the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on a habeas corpus petition moved by her, claimed to be a bachelor and denied any marital relationship between them.

Though the girl stated that their marriage took place at Tiruchendur Murugan Temple where he tied a `thaali' around her neck, and they lived together for nearly one-and-a-half months, she failed to convince the court with any documentary evidence.

However, while closing the petition, a Division Bench comprising Justice D. Murugesan and Justice A.R. Ramalingam, relegated the petitioner to approach the appropriate court having jurisdiction over such disputes.

According to the girl, belonging to Subramaniyapuram in Tirunelveli district, she fell in love with her neighbour, and since both their parents refused to solemnise their marriage, she eloped with him and got married in the temple on November 21 last. Subsequently the couple spent their married life at their relative's house, till the mother-in-law of the petitioner took her son back home on January 5.

Though the girl made a complaint to the Puliangudi police station and to the Superintendent of Police in Tirunelveli district, nothing transpired and hence she moved the Bench.
