Man commits suicide in temple

Coimbatore Dec. 4 . An unidentified devotee, said to be in his late 30s, immolated himself in the sanctum sanctorum of the Karunambigai Amman at the Avinashilingeswarar temple at Avinashi, about 30 km from here, this morning.

According to eyewitnesses, the devotee entered the temple around 10.40 a.m. with a bag containing a can of fuel.

After creating a scene, he wanted to be left alone in the sanctum sanctorum for an hour for performing a special pooja to the deity.

He even left a note outside, asking the people to bear with him for an hour. He reportedly whipped a knife at the priest, who tried to prevent him from entering the sanctum sanctorum. After gaining entry, he doused himself with the fuel and set himself ablaze.

The body was charred beyond recognition.

As the incident sparked rumours, shopkeepers downed the shutters. The police had a tough time dispelling rumours. Tight security placed around the temple and elsewhere in the town.
