Malkani cremated with state honours

Pondicherry Oct. 28. The body of the Pondicherry Lt. Governor, K. R. Malkani, who died of cardiac arrest on Monday, was consigned to flames at the Karuvadikuppam crematorium here today.

His sons, Aravind Malkani and Vikram Malkani, and his son-in-law, Rakesh Rao, performed the last rites, amidst chanting of slokas.

The Deputy Prime Minister, L.K. Advani; the Union Minister of State for Surface Transport and National Highways, Pon. Radhakrishnan; the Union Minister of State for Communications and Information Technology, S. Thirunavukkarasar; the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh president, K. S. Sudharshan; the Pondicherry Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy; his Cabinet colleagues and the Opposition leader, R. V. Janakiraman, were among those who paid their last respects to the departed octogenarian.

The armed police played `Last Post Retreat' and Malkani was cremated with full state honours.

Advani tribute

Before leaving Pondicherry, Mr. Advani told newspersons that he had known Malkani for nearly 60 years from his college days in Hyderabad Sindh.

"We were associated in several fields.We both were swayamsevaks in the RSS in the Sindh. Malkani was a committed patriot. For him, the nation was the first. If one went through his book India First one would be convinced of his transparent sincerity. In his death, the country has lost a great patriot.

During his brief tenure as Lt. Governor of Pondicherry, he demonstrated the qualities of good administrator and leadership."
