Malkani a multifaceted personality, says Kalam

Pondicherry Oct. 28. The President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, has described the Lt. Governor of Pondicherry, K.R. Malkani, as "a multifaceted personality who took a genuine interest in developmental works in the Union Territory".

In a condolence message to the Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy, yesterday, the President said "it is a great loss to all of us, particularly to the people of Pondicherry". He asked the Chief Minister to convey his condolences to members of the bereaved family.

The Chief Minister recalled the impeccable love and affection Malkani had developed towards the people of Pondicherry. His straightforward approach and concern for the development of the Union Territory marked his sterling qualities, Mr. Rangasamy said.

The Assembly Speaker, M.D.R. Ramachandran, the Local Administration Minister, A. Elumalai, the Education Minister, K. Lakshminarayanan, the Welfare and Industries Minister, M Chandirakasu, and various party leaders expressed sorrow at the death of Malkani.

The Chairman of the Confederation of Indian Industries (southern region), A. Natarajan, recalled the interest Malkani evinced to CII suggestions for a `clean and beautiful' Pondicherry to attract tourists.

The Pondicherry University Non-Teaching Staff Welfare Association, the Kamban Kazhagam (Pondicherry), the Chamber of Commerce and the Pudhuvai Kamarajar Narpani Mandram also condoled the death.

All government offices, schools and colleges remained closed today as a mark of respect to Malkani.
