TAMIL NADU

Making a political point

CHENNAI, JULY 24. When the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam president, M. Karunanidhi, pressed a remote control button at a function here today, he was not only inaugurating a few facilities, but also pressing a political point.

Taking an dig at the recent statement of the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, about the efficacy of electronic voting machines, he declared: "This button (on the remote) works properly."

Noting that several researches were being conducted to put the blame on the (EVM) instrument, he told the gathering at Chennai port, "even I had doubts when I pressed one button to open several facilities on whether they would happen as intended. But the button worked, something to cheer about."

Earlier, he said he was attending the function despite health problems. "But, you are my medicine," Mr. Karunanidhi told the meeting, in which several DMK leaders participated.

He said he was attending a Government function after a gap of 39 months and after getting 39 (seats) in Tamil Nadu.
